Here at Appeal, we’ve worked on window blind projects for all manner of buildings. We’ve created shading options for residential homes and commercial buildings alike, and we’re always conscious of who our clients are. In this article, we’d like to focus on window blinds for accessible living. Technically, this falls under the category of domestic shading, but there are a few things to think about which are worth examining in further detail.

When we say accessible living, we’re referring to two groups of people; those living with disabilities and the elderly. Their requirements aren’t always the same, but there is some crossover. This is everything you need to know about window blinds and accessibility.

Ease Of Use

First, let’s look at the practicality of window blinds. The standard method of operating them is by hand, using cords or chains,  but if you have diminished mobility in the arms or shoulders, this might not be the best choice. Opting for remote-controlled electric blinds means they’ll be easier to operate. We’d recommend having a wall panel installed too, in case you misplace the remote.

Fire Safety

Another thing to bear in mind is fire safety. This is especially important for our older customers, as they’re more likely to be at risk from fire-related fatalities. A detailed study of fire department data from April 2017 through March 2018 identified that the rate of fire-related fatalities increases with age. Men over 80 years old were at the most risk of all demographics, so reducing the danger is vital.

That’s why it’s worth looking into the material from which the blinds are made. Polyester is fire retardant and other fabrics can be treated to make them fire resistant. We’d also recommend keeping your blinds away from potential hazards such as stove tops in the kitchen. Firesafe blinds might seem like an extravagance, but they can save lives.

Improving Sleep

On a slightly less dangerous but no less important note, the right blinds can help improve your sleep. Older adults don’t usually need any more sleep than younger ones, but many of them report frequent bouts of insomnia and restlessness. You’re more likely to experience confusion and forgetfulness when exhausted, and sleep problems can greatly impact your quality of life.

If this sounds familiar, blackout blinds could help. Our circadian rhythms change as we age, but these blinds will trick your body into thinking it’s still nighttime and block out disruptive external light sources. If you’ve got streetlights outside your home, blackout blinds will help to stop them from interfering with your night.
