Winchester church unveils new windows

A church in Winchester has revealed its new look, which has been designed to attract visitors and make the building more accessible, romseyadvertiser.co.uk reports.

St Lawrence Church in The Square now boasts an engraved glass screen flanked by two similarly engraved windows. More than £20,000 was raised to fund the glass works, in addition to improved lighting and disabled access.

70 per cent of loan applications are for the home

One in seven loan applications relates to ‘property issues’ – including building extensions and conservatories, says a short term loans firm.

UK personal asset lender, borro, has reported a staggering 661 per cent increase on loan applications made, easier.com reports; claiming that 70 per cent of them pertain to some sort of property development or redecoration.

Councillor labels conservatory guidelines unacceptable

A council policy on the construction of conservatories in Wansbeck, Northumberland looks set to be abandoned following local opposition.

Councillor Jimmy Sawyer, who represents Ashington College’s ward, suggested the rule in question “beggars belief”. In order to preserve uniformity, the local authority had been refusing all glass extensions being built at the front of terraced houses on certain streets, according to newspostleader.co.uk.

Cactus sales spike thanks to the family conservatory

Sales of cacti for conservatories are booming, as many other houseplants struggle to cope with the heat and hosepipe ban in Britain.

That’s according to the UK’s biggest cactus grower Linda Goodey, whose cactus business Cactusland – based in Lincolnshire – has seen sales go through the roof in recent weeks.

“Conservatory tax” measures likely to be abandoned

Plans to bring in a “conservatory tax” will be vetoed by Conservative government ministers, according to an inside source.

Citing “an attack on inspiration”, the Whitehall insider said there is little support for the plans which would see homeowners fork out hundreds more on their conservatories due to mandatory energy efficiency installations.

Such energy measures, according to the Mail Online, include forcing homeowners to install loft and wall installation or draught-proofing. The rules would apply every time a homeowner wants to build a conservatory, replace a broken boiler or install new windows.

Homeowners urged to extend house before 2014

Those planning to add a conservatory to their home have been urged to act fast to avoid being stung by new ‘green’ laws proposed by the government.

Ministers have suggested that anyone planning to extend their home should only be granted planning permission if their house has been fully insulated.
