A well-renowned DIY expert, Nick Knowles, has advised Britons to know their “limits” when it comes to undertaking work around the home by themselves.

More often than not, homeowners will take it upon themselves to re-wire their lighting, install their conservatory blinds or put up some new shelves.

However sometimes it’s best to get the professionals in to ensure the job is done properly, Knowles suggested. The television star told Wn.com: “I don’t claim to be a builder. But in the last 12 years of presenting DIY SOS and The Big Build, I have learnt enough to be confident of being able to build a house from scratch.

“It’s been a long apprenticeship and the best topics I’ve picked up are to be realistic about what you can do,” Knowles added. He went on to suggest getting a professional in to take care of the job, adding: “That will be a case of money saved and time well spent.”

The DIY expert continued; urging those determined to do the job themselves to use decent tools, treat electrical wiring “with the utmost respect” and to measure up in preparation.

What’s more, he suggested on Mail Online that homeowners take the job “one step at a time” in order to avoid becoming de-motivated or disheartened with the task. Keeping tools sharp and clean is advised too, Knowles said.
